Learn & EngageResources

Whether you are a formal learner, or just curious to find out more, we can help you to engage with creativity, conceptual thinking and cultural meaning at IMMA.

At IMMA our mission is to connect audiences and art, and one of the ways we do that is to build up a series of resources that can help inform your visit, or that you can turn to when you want to find out more about a particular artist or work that you encounter on your visit. This website is itself a key resource and one we will be building up over time.

If you are interested in the work of a particular artist the best place to start is our Artist A-Z directory. You can search here by artist name, or filter your search to see only Irish artists, or artists specific to the Collection, or the residency programme. These artist profiles are continually being added to as we digitize more of our programme archive, and they are a great place to start as we have worked with hundreds of artists since we opened in 1991.

If you are interested in learning more about an artwork from the Collection you can browse the entire National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art here on the site. Most works are accompanied by an image and we are working to complete the digitisation of works by 2020.

If you are interested in finding out more about contemporary art in general – the terms that are commonly used and what they mean – you can visit the What is __? section of the website and explore the glossary and texts.

We regularly invite a whole range of writers to contribute to our Magazine, from IMMA curators, programmers and visitor engagement team members to external curators, contributors, speakers and academics. We also regularly produce texts, audio and video, which you can find out more about below.

All IMMA Talks are recorded and the vast majority are made available on our Soundcloud page, an incredible free resource where you can hear directly from artists, curators and leading thinkers on the themes behind the work we present. You will find links to these talks on the relevant exhibition or event page on the website, and you can browse the progamme here>

You can listen back to some of the latest talks from the programme available here:

We produce introductory videos for most of our exhibitions which you can watch online on the IMMA youtube channel or in-gallery when you visit. Look for the TV screens at the entrance to the Main Galleries on the First floor, or near reception as you exit to the Courtyard Galleries. You will also find videos on the individual exhibition pages of this website that you can load to your own device.

Watch a selection of videos from 2018

Every exhibition at IMMA is accompanied by a free printed exhibition guide which will tell you more about the work on exhibition. You can pick one up at reception or at the entrance to each exhibition. Ask a member of the Visitor Engagement Team if you can’t locate a copy. You will find a downloadable pdf of the guide on each individual exhibition page of the website, and you can find an archive of these Guides below.
