Directions & Map

IMMA is situated in Dublin 8 and is easily accessible by car, on foot, by rail, bus or bike. On this page you’ll find detailed instructions on how to reach the museum by each mode of transport, and links and maps to plan your journey. IMMA’s galleries are to be found in the main building, and the Garden Galleries – a stand-alone building adjacent to the gardens. The Shop is also found in the main building. There is also an outdoor pop-up café Camerino Bakery located in our Courtyard and indoor cafe located in our basement.

The best orientation point is to enter through the main Courtyard and open our Discover IMMA Map. This interactive map will help you uncover the various IMMA Collection outdoor artworks and artist commissions.The staff at the front desk, located in the Courtyard inside the main glass entrance, will be happy to help you with your visit from there.

Temporary closure of Main Reception.

We are excited to share the news that our Main Reception is about to take on a brand new look. Keeping in line with our vision to be the most dynamic and welcoming cultural destination in Ireland, IMMA is thrilled to announce our collaboration with the design team Culturstruction, who are working with us to enhance your visit by revitalising our reception spaces.

Construction will take place in our Main Reception area from Tuesday, 22 April until mid-June 2024. A temporary reception will be open to visitors on the ground floor, next to the original main entrance at IMMA.

Getting to IMMA

The main Museum entrance is on Military Road and directions below are for this entrance. There is also a secondary entrance (Pedestrian only) on South Circular Road, opposite the Courthouse at Kilmainham Gaol.


On Foot

IMMA is approximately a 30 to 40 minute walk from the city centre, and an 8 mins walk from transport hub Heuston Station.

We are located in Dublin 8, within a 15-20 mins walking distance of a number of other visitor attractions.

By Bike

If you are cycling to IMMA you will find bicycle parking at the rear of the building, just before the entrance to the car park. Follow signs for the car park. There are also a number of Dublin Bikes stations near IMMA, including one right at the entrance on Military Road (outside Supervalu) and another on Kilmainham Lane.

By Car

IMMA is approx. a 12 minute drive from city centre (St. Stephen’s Green). There is ample on-site parking which is just €3 for the first three hours. Parking machines take both coins and chip and pin cards.

Please note that if you are entering Dublin via car from the West / N4 / M4 you cannot turn right onto Military Road. To access IMMA from this direction you can either turn right toward Kilmainham village and access via Kilmainham Road, or continue on the quays past Heuston Station and turn right onto the Rory O’Moore Bridge and loop back along the quays toward IMMA, turning left onto the South Circular Road and then left again up Kilmainham Lane.


Take, or connect to, the Red line Luas (tram) to Heuston Station. IMMA is an 8 minute walk via Military Road. You can use the Route Planner to plan your visit using public transport.

By Train

IMMA is an 8 minute walk from Heuston Station, one of two major train stations in the city. Connolly Station is the other major station, which is connected to Heuston Station by the Red Luas line. Consult Irish Rail to plan your journey by train.

By Bus

You can reach IMMA by taking a bus (145 or C-Spine buses C1,2,3,4) to Heuston Station and then walking 8 minutes to IMMA via the Military Road gate

Or by taking a bus (13, 40, 123, G-Spine G1,2) to St. James’s Hospital which is also an 8 minute walk via steps to Bow Lane onto Irwin St. and then Military Rd.

You can also reach IMMA by using one of the Hop-on Hop-off Tourist Bus services, all of which stop right outside IMMA’s Military Road entrance. You can use the Route Planner to plan your visit using public transport.

Floor Map

IMMA’s galleries are to be found in the Ground and First Floors of the main building, and in the Freud Centre; a stand-alone building adjacent to the gardens. The shop is on the First Floor, the lecture room on the Ground Floor and the cafe in the basement.
