Role Exchange, 1975

The photographic diptych ‘Role Exchange’ documents a performance of the same name in which Marina Abramović exchanged places with a woman from the Red Light district in Amsterdam. The woman attended the opening of an art exhibition while Abramović took the woman’s place at the window of her house of business. Each woman took full responsibility for the experiences that the role exchange brought with it.

About the Artist

Marina Abramović, b.1946

Marina Abramović is widely recognised as one of the world's foremost performance artists. Born in Yugoslavia, she has travelled and worked throughout Europe, the United States, China and Latin America. Following a solo exhibition at IMMA in 1996, Abramović was invited to curate ‘Marking the Territory’ in 2001, which drew together some 30 international performance artists at the Museum.
