IMMA and HIV Ireland are partnering to deliver a workshop addressing the experience of HIV and AIDS from a cultural, educational, and wellbeing perspective, in the context of the exhibition Derek Jarman: PROTEST! and associated programme CHROMA. This discursive workshop will be facilitated by Seán Kissane, IMMA Curator, Adam Shanley, MPOWER Programme Manager at HIV Ireland, and John Paul O’Brien, Psychotherapist and Group Facilitator.

Date: Time:
Saturday 22 February 2020 14:30-17:00

This is a three part workshop comprising of the following:

  • Culture with Seán Kissane, Curator: Exhibitions, IMMA. Experience a walk-through tour of the exhibition PROTEST! with a focus on the theme of HIV within Derek Jarman’s practice.
  • Education with Adam Shanley, MPOWER Programme Manager at HIV Ireland. This session will cover the basics of HIV and pay special attention to innovations in HIV prevention strategies including PrEP and U=U. We’ll discuss how huge advances in testing and treatment have been made since Jarman died of an AIDS-related illness in 1994 and examine the impact that stigma and discrimination have on people living with HIV.
  • Wellbeing with John Paul O’Brien, Psychotherapist and Group Facilitator. This workshop will explore a specific aspect of our sexual well-being – internalised stigma. We will tap into our own creativity to recognise, express and let go of some of the internalised stigma that no longer serves us.

This workshop is free but booking is essential. Places are limited and allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Please present a copy of your ticket when you arrive at IMMA for the workshop. If, following booking, you are unable to take up your place at the workshop, please inform IMMA as soon as possible so that the vacant place may be reallocated.
