Friday 7 November

Preface lecture :: Primal Architecture
1pm – 2pm, Lecture Room, FREE
Mike Kelley: Lent Felt (Intimations of his Mind’s Fall), with John C Welchman
Presented in partnership with IADT ARC, this is a valedictory lecture on the life and work of Mike Kelley; artist, noise musician, writer, actor, benefactor, teacher and Catholic misfit. Kelley’s work ‘Primal Architecture’ has lent its name to the group exhbtiion, and in this lecture Kelley’s powerful contribution to contemporary art will be examined by John C. Welchamn, including his influential body of critical and creative writings and his special brand of parodic humor and irony and aesthetics.  Read more>

The opening reception is followed by Primal Rising, a live music and DJ night which marks the start of IMMA’s winter opening weekend.

Duncan Campbell
8 November 2014 – 29 March 2015
The first major exhibition in Dublin of the work of Irish-born artist Duncan Campbell, a nominee for the 2014 Turner Prize. Combining archival and filmed material Campbell’s films question our reading of the documentary form as a fixed representation of reality, opening up the boundaries between the actual and the imagined, record and interpretation. This solo exhibition comprises four of his major film works; Bernadette (2008); Make It New John (2009); Arbeit (2011) and It for Others (2013). Read more>
Primal Architecture

Borrowing its title from Mike Kelley’s iconic work, Primal Architecture, this exhibition brings together works by both international and Irish artists that elaborate on notions of pseudo-autobiography, sexuality, consciousness, identity, architecture, power and nostalgia. The selection of works on display spans generations, and across varied media including installation, video, sculpture, drawing, performance and photography. Read more>

Primal Rising

IMMA presents Primal Rising, a live music and DJ night in response to and in the spirit of the exhibition Primal Architecture. Underground/ alternative/ punk – the night will include Dublin based bands Sissy and Faune and a DJ set by Chad Jackson. Further details to be announced. Book Tickets

Photographer’s Bus Tour :: Second Sight: The David Kronn Photography Collection

Amelia Stein and Seán Kissane (Curator, Exhibitions, IMMA) lead a photographer’s bus tour of Evelyn Hofer’s Dublin. Tickets €20, includes bus and lunch. Book your place here

Sarah Glennie (Director, IMMA and curator of the Duncan Campbell exhibition), will present an introduction to the exhibition. This is a free event. Book your place.
Artists’ Roundtable Discussion :: Primal Architecture
2.00 – 3.30pm, Lecture Room
Artists’ Kevin Atherton, Linder, Jesse Jones, Bedwyr Williams and Conrad Shawcross discuss the exhibition with Rachael Thomas (Head of Exhibitions, IMMA) and discussion moderator Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith (writer, critic, and lecturer UCD).This is a free event. Book your place.

Mid-Term at IMMA : Halloween Workshops

Halloween is nearly here and IMMA has a host of workshops and activities for families and young people during the mid-term break. Following on from a successful first series during the summer holidays, the free family workshop Mornings at the Museum returns, from Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 October and Explorer, IMMA’s on-going weekly family workshop, bookends the mid-term break on Sundays 26 October and 2 November, 2pm - 4pm. For Young People we have a very hands-on, artist-led workshop with Felicity Clear connected to the IMMA Collection exhibition Conversations, and the fantastic Theatre Lovett, purveyors of fine theatre for children, women and men, return for their unique take on the IMMA Collection through Conversations, Exhortations, Exhaustions.
