To all new parents, we are inviting you to come to IMMA and join us for Parent & Baby Hour at the Museum. Join Ciara Murray and Joan Walker, from IMMA’s Visitor Engagement Team, in the gallery for a relaxed tour and discussion about the artwork. The meeting place for the session is at the main IMMA reception.

Our aim is to provide a relaxed casual space for parents to meet up and at the same time to nurture their imaginative and creative side with baby looking on. As much as we love to see the gorgeous, beautiful babies, this is about ‘You’, the parent, your time for You!

Note: This session is for parents with young babies who are not yet mobile.

IMMA Horizons: Slow Looking Art Tour

These tours will help you to slow down and spend time with selected artworks, discussing them with others in a convivial and supportive atmosphere

All are welcome to sign up for this free programme, no previous experience required.

Slow Looking Art Tours are offered as part of IMMA Horizons: Lifelong Creativity for the Curious. IMMA Horizons provides free creative experiences and events for adults to meet and explore art together at a relaxed pace, in a sociable and supportive environment that encourages active participation by all. Take time for yourself and discover new ways of looking at the world and connecting with others, through facilitated experiences at IMMA and online.

OPW Tour: The women of the Royal Hospital
Wed 25 June
6-7pm

Location:  Johnston Room, North Range
Free, booking required. Book your place here

The recent discovery of the ‘lost’ records of the royal military hospital at Kilmainham offers new perspectives on the social and cultural history of the institution. The site has traditionally been seen as an exclusively male community. Yet, the records show there were a surprising number of women living in and working there throughout the more than 230 years of its existence.

This talk will explore what the records tell us about the lives and status of these women, as well as their interactions with the resident old soldiers and the military authorities who managed the hospital. It will trace the outlines of a decline in the status of women at the hospital in the years before and after the Act of Union, as well as tensions during the late nineteenth century around the professionalisation of nursing services at the hospital.

The talk will be given by Jason McElligott, Director of Marsh’s Library. He is a native of Cabra in Dublin and did his undergraduate and MA degrees in history at UCD and his Ph.D. at St John’s College Cambridge. He is a former Fellow of Merton College, Oxford, and is writing a monograph on book theft in 18th-century Dublin.

Meeting place is the Johnston Room, located in the west corner of the North Range, just off the central courtyard of the Royal Hospital. Doors open 5:50pm. Look out for OPW signage.
