IMMA is delighted to present a lecture by one of the world’s leading artists Doris Salcedo. Introduced and moderated by IMMA’s new Director Annie Fletcher, Salcedo will discuss her major  exhibition Acts of Mourning at the offsite venue the Light House Cinema, Smithfield, Dublin 7.

Doris Salcedo is a renowned installation artist and sculptor, who creates major art commissions for galleries and non-art public spaces. In addressing ideas of embodied histories, the artist is acclaimed for her extensive research into the areas and the lives of those most affected by Colombia’s civil war, a conflict that has lasted several decades. Salcedo’s sculptures are concerned with the victims of violence in her own country, yet also work beyond this frame of reference. In a wider sense they deal with the individual and collective experiences of loss, grief and the manner in which these experiences can be distorted and conveyed.

In reflecting on questions of ‘forgetting’ and ‘memory’ in artworks, Salcedo explores the philosophical underpinnings of her most iconic bodies of work, the formal language of sculpture, and the agency of every day and domestic materials to unlock meaning over time against the backdrop of global,  geopolitical realities.
