The What Is_? Programme provides an introduction to some of the key concepts and themes in modern and contemporary art for all audiences.

About What Is_?

This IMMA programme is a great way to find out more about the concepts and terms used in contemporary art. It includes talks, booklets and web-based resources which you can explore below. The programme is presented in four series, three of which you can explore in the menu above.

Series 1: 1970–NOW

Series 2: 1900–1970

Series 3: Materials & Methodologies

Drawing (to be added at a future date)

Series 4: Theory

Presented in collaboration with MA, Art in the Contemporary World, NCAD (to be added at a future date)

Each series draws on the expertise and experience of lecturers, artists, curators and critical writers. Each topic is addressed by a talk, which you can download below, and is supported by a summary text, the presenter’s essay, a suggested reading list, and a glossary of terms.

These resources are also available in a series of booklets which you can download below.
