Michael Warren, b.1950

Stele XI1997

Using gravitational force as a starting point, this sculpture reads downwards and is undercut at floor-level to achieve minimum contact with the ground at its base. While referencing a memorial, ‘Stele XI’ is a hand-carved meditative work created in response to material, which speaks of the importance of craftsmanship. Warren says, ‘I particularly enjoy the timber-vaulted roofs sometimes discovered in old barns or churches; I enjoy dry-stone walls, hand carved headstones, a chair that ‘stands’ well – objects made from traditional skills, finely honed over generations’.

About the Artist

Michael Warren b.1950

Irish artist Michael Warren studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan. His monumental sculptures often seem to defy gravity and their strength lies in Warren’s ability to combine autonomous elements that retain their own tension and rhythm. Warren’s outdoor works are on public display worldwide. He was made a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 2008, and an honorary member of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland in 2102.
