Short Strand presents edited documentation of one of Johnston’s unannounced street performances, filmed from a parked car at locations across Belfast in 2000. The work is shown alongside alternating UTV news clips tracing the rise and decline of The Peace People, a movement founded in 1976 in response to violence in Northern Ireland. Incorporating extracts from Johnston’s 2003 interview with peace activist Mairead Corrigan Maguire, the installation reconsiders the organisation’s legacy and its promotion of non-violent approaches to reconciliation, education, and conflict resolution.
