Feathered, taxidermied sitters such as owl, snipe and lapwing occur in Edward McGuire’s paintings, often as backdrops to his hyper-realistic portraits such as those of Seamus Heaney and Michael Hartnett, poets of Irish life and nature. Owl typifies the artist’s painstakingly slow and meticulous process, itself testifying to the wisdom, intuition and mystery of owls as messengers between worlds.
