About the Artist

Ferenc Martyn, 1899–1986

Hungarian artist Ferenc Martyn moved to Paris in the 1920s. In Paris, Martyn associated with the Abstraction-Création group who were actively promoting the principles of pure abstraction in art in the 1930s. Martyn’s abstract paintings, sculpture and ceramic works from this time borrow from his personal experience, music and folk culture. Also working in literary illustration, in 1982 he produced 24 illustrations for James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ in celebration of the centenary of the writer’s birth.
