About the Artist

Ferenc Martyn 1899–1986

Hungarian painter and sculptor Ferenc Martyn lived in Paris from the 1920s. In Paris Martyn associated with the Abstraction-Création group of artists who were actively promoting the principles of pure abstraction in art in the 1930s. Martyn’s spontaneous abstract paintings, sculpture and ceramic works from this time borrow from his personal experience, music and folk culture. Also working in literary illustration, in 1982 he produced 24 illustrations for James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ in celebration of the centenary of the writer’s birth. — View Artist »
