‘Billy’ is a self-portrait and one of a series of large photoworks which deal with the AIDS virus. Undertaken as a homage to friends and colleagues stricken by the disease in New York in the 1990s, Quinn photographed volunteers with an attribute against a gold leaf background reminiscent of the saints in medieval icons.
