Swiss artist Sonja Sekula moved to the United States in 1936. She studied philosophy, literature and painting at Sarah Lawrence College. Sekula entered the Art Students League in 1941. During the 1940s she met André Breton, Robert Matta, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst and others among the Surrealist group. Sekula contributed to the Surrealist Magazine VVV in 1943. From the 1940s she had solo exhibitions at the Peggy Guggenheim Gallery and also exhibited at the Betty Parsons Gallery.
