A founding figure of both Minimal and Conceptual art, Sol LeWitt was born in Hartford, Conneticut. LeWitt attended Syracuse University then served in the United States Army in Korea and Japan. He moved to New York in 1953 where he took classes at the Cartoonists and Illustrators School and worked as a draughtsman. LeWitt participated in several significant group exhibitions of Minimalist and Conceptual art in the late 1960s and 1970s. ‘Sol LeWitt: New Wall Drawings’ was shown at IMMA in 2001.
