Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies studied law at Barcelona University before becoming a full-time artist. From the late 1940s, Tàpies experimented with unconventional materials such as ground chalk, earth and dust in his collage-based paintings. Now considered one of the most innovative painters associated with Art Informel, he has exhibited internationally since the 1950s and is represented in major collections worldwide. The Fundació Antoni Tàpies opened in Barcelona in 1984.
