Overview

Alan Phelan, Information Deficit blended-in as a Tree, 2006, metal, wood, papier-mâché, polystyrene, clay, paint, varnish, polish, photograph, Courtesy of mother's tankstation, Dublin

Studio 12
November 2007 – 18 May 2008

Sculpture, installation, critical writing, curatorial practice

Alan Phelan’s practice involves the production of objects, participatory projects, curating and writing. These all inform and contribute to an interest in the narrative potential surrounding an artwork. This can be exploited or explored from actual and historical events, ideas, things and places as well as their fictional counterparts. What results are artworks that might appear fixed but are actually in a process of shifting interpretation and mediation. Phelan places process as central to the artwork which he describes as provisional, unfinished or unmade. This allows for the final object or project to maintain potentiality, allowing for wider and often humorous connections across narratives, objects and situations. Recent shows by Alan Phelan are Points of View In Transition, Solstice Arts Centre, Navan, 2008; Ralph Eamon Odo Barbara, mother’s tankstation, Dublin, 2007; Fading Fast, Millennium Court Arts Centre, Portadown, Northern Ireland, 2006 and Felons, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, 2005 (artist-curated project). While on residency at IMMA Phelan is working on a sculpture commission for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
