The Royal Hospital Kilmainham (RHK) is an iconic landmark. in Dublin. It was built between 1680 and 1684 by royal command and predates its sister, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, by just two years. This is the oldest classical building in Ireland and was based on Les Invalides in Paris. We began looking after army pensioners from the Battle Of The Boyne in 1690. When it was built initially, the hospital housed just 20 people although it was designed for 400. At times throughout history it housed up to 2,500 people.
We have looked after people since 1684. Over the course of more than 330 years we have perfected it.
The beautiful gardens here were originally used for medicinal purposes but over time they became the private gardens of the Master of the RHK who was in charge of the British Army in Ireland at that time.
In 1991, the RHK became home to IMMA – the Irish Museum of Modern Art – which fills the galleries and green spaces with a constantly changing programme of modern and contemporary art. Indeed IMMA is home to the National Collection of modern and contemporary art, and the stunning sculptures you see throughout the campus are part of that Collection.
IMMA operates the campus at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham (RHK). We are delighted to share the stunning rooms of the North Range of the building, and the grounds, with our private and corporate RHK clients, where we host one prestigious event at a time, including weddings, conferences, product launches, gala banquets and exhibitions.
The RHK is easy to get to and from, has lots of room to host events of all sizes, parking for 400 and our event team is hugely experienced in creating days like no other. The entire banqueting wing, which is typical 17th century in style, was the soldiers dining, religious and recreational area. The high ceilings and magnificent windows inherited from this classical period, offer an airy and versatile space for modern day use. All the rooms provide a unique backdrop for conferences and dining alike.
While its spaciousness makes it an ideal location for concerts and award ceremonies, having direct access to the enclosed courtyard, it is also well appointed for product launches. As the North Range is serviced with lifts and accessible bathroom facilities, it is easily accessible for wheelchair users.
All of the income that we generate from private hire goes directly towards IMMA’s ambitious programme, so you are not only using a building and a team like no other, but you are also helping to support art and artists in Ireland.
Our past clients have included the Irish Government, the EU, Facebook, Amazon, Google, LinkedIn and Aer Lingus. We have hosted landmark events for the Government, such as the 2004 and 2013 EU Presidency events, Failte Ireland’s Meitheal – Ireland’s most significant international trade event – in 2008 and 2015, and we are honoured to host the National Commemoration Day every year. If the RHK looks familiar that’s because it has been used for many movies and TV shows, including The Madman and the Professor, The Tudors and Penny Dreadful. Many important award nights have been held here too, including the Irish Theatre Awards and Inter Trade Ireland Innovation Awards, both for Irish Times, and the Best of Dublin Awards 2015 and 2018.
The spaces in the North Range and Meadows are available to hire directly from our dedicated Events team, and are also available, in tandem with an IMMA experience, to our Corporate Members and Partners.
