Interweaving the histories of two entities—IMMA’s Residency Programme and the Free International University model advocated by Joseph Beuys & Dorothy Walker—students from the IADT Masters in Art and Research Collaboration (ARC) will turn the IMMA Project Space into an experimental public research-hub. They will create an open space for the investigation of living and making, to explore how art practice and art thinking can produce alternative forms of ‘statecraft’.

As part of the research project statəcraft,  IADT: ARC students will be presenting an open programme of events in IMMA’s Project Spaces. All statəcraft events are open to the public, but places are limited for some events and booking is required for Hit Parade and some talks/discussions.

Talks and Events

Saturday 12 March 2016, 11am-4pm, Project Spaces, IMMA
Intarsia showcase with Liadain Aiken

Liadain Aiken will demonstrate her slow-fashion craft by knitting the statecraft logo in the intarsia technique. Liadain weaves technical knitting skills with an ability to see and create visual images ‐planning and building patterns row by row. The textures of landscapes act as a strong visual inspiration for Liadain’s knitwear. Her interest in sustainability led her to further investigate the Slow Fashion movement. These ideas have grown to become a central thread of her work ‐ she now sources wool from Donegal Yarns, believing that their traditionally spun merino yarns perfectly capture the beautiful colours of the Irish landscapes.

Wednesday 16 March 2016/Project Spaces/Studio 5, IMMA
5.30pm: Launch of statecraft research hub
6pm: Hit Parade, sound art podcast by Michelle Doyle
Listening 1: 6pm-6.30pm
Listening 2: 6.30-7pm

Hit Parade is the launch of a sound art podcast series of the same title. The series meditates on the word “occupation”; from squatting, military states, national borders, time spent doing activities and even labour itself. Being occupied by something is a process which can be enjoyable yet could ultimately be a distraction. Each episode comprises of soundscapes, dialogue and found sounds as a form of investigation. This event is a group listening party, where participants not only preview a podcast but hear it as an 8 channel audio sculpture. Tickets for Hit Parade are free but places are limited.  Book your place at Listening 1 or 2 here.

Saturday 26 March (& Sat. 2 April) 2016, 11am-1pm, Project Spaces, IMMA
Embroidered Identities, two-part workshop devised by Jai Thorn in collaboration with Marie Thornton
Inspired by John Ruskin’s interest in self-improvement through craft education and skill, this small group workshop introduces participants to basic embroidery techniques, and explores how these techniques can be used to personalise mass produced clothing and other textiles. The workshop is organised over two Saturday mornings and participants are encouraged to attend both sessions if possible. Participants are asked to bring with them items for personalisation and a design that can be embroidered on to the clothing. This process will be documented by Jai Thorn as part of an ongoing research project.

Thursday 31 March 2016, 3pm, Project Spaces,  IMMA
Residencies Re-imagined: Audio Walk, recorded by Amy Farrell and Susan Gogan in collaboration with Ruby Wallis

Residencies Re-imagined is a virtual audio tour around the grounds of IMMA offering the visitor a unique way to interact with works that were realised at various moments in the history of the museum’s residency programme, in locations such as IMMA’s forecourt, courtyard, garden and meadow. A portable mp3 player and headphones will be provided and the audio will also be available to download from SoundCloud directly to your mobile phone.  Following the exploration of IMMA’s grounds, visitors are invited to the Project Spaces to respond to the tour and view documentation of the featured works. Drop-in tours are also available on Saturday 2 April and Sunday 3 April, 2016, 12-4pm.

Friday 1 April 2016, 11am- 12pm, Project Spaces, IMMA
Ruby Wallis in conversation with ARC students.

Ruby Wallis, a current artist-resident at IMMA, will discuss her PhD research and her current practice, including recent work exhibited at Belfast Exposed. Based in an alternative community in the Burren in the west of Ireland, Wallis sought to expand the medium of photography beyond the objective gaze and monocular vision to develop new methods of mapping, and to open new areas of inquiry through lens based fine art practice. Her very recent images highlight interactions and pressure between tactile and tangible surfaces and substances that are natural or synthetic, organic or structured, intimate or abstract.

Friday 1 April 2016, 1-2pm, Project Spaces, IMMA
Open Discussion: statəcraft
Aesthetics | Ressentiment | Non-place.

Sinéad Hogan (Lecturer, IADT: ARC) will introduce the work of Jacques Derrida in relation to a politics of statements, trauma and impossibility. The focus of the talk will be on the radical impossibility of an apology. This session will explore some points of connection between Statecraft, a research project by IADT: ARC and IMMA’s ongoing programme Art | Memory | Place: Artists’ Films currently presented in the Project Spaces, 23 Feb – 5 April 2016. Booking required. Book free tickets here.

Tuesday 5 April 2016, 2pm – 5.30pm, North Wing, IMMA
Begin Anywhere | Third Level Forum

Inspired by the words of John Cage, ‘begin anywhere’ invites undergraduate students to participate in an artist-centred conversation about the possibilities of artistic practice after art school. Presentations will explore the practices of artist-led spaces, independent curators and resource organisations, and will provide opportunities for students to exchange ideas, pose questions and make connections. This forum caters for third-year and fourth-year BA art students from all over Ireland, who are interested in gaining a deeper insight into developing a practice within the arts sector. Booking required. Book free tickets here.

Tuesday 5 April 2016, 6 – 7pm, Project Spaces, IMMA

This discussion is led by IADT: ARC MA students and course lecturers, Sinead Hogan and Maeve Connolly, who are currently presenting a research project on IMMA’s residency in the Project Spaces.
