This exhibition offers the first opportunity to study the Barry Joule Archive of works on paper attributed to Francis Bacon. The exhibition presents a selection of key pieces from the Joule Archive, most notably from the ‘X Album’, a family photograph album used by the artist as a site for exploratory studies using collage and painting. The imagery of the ‘X Album’ contributes to a wider critical understanding of the themes that Francis Bacon developed in his major paintings. The exhibition also contains a substantial selection of ‘Working Documents’, reworked media images, which again, in their treatment and subject matter, provide the source for expanded interpretations of the artist’s work.
