IMMA presents the iconic early works of Yvonne Rainer in May, including dance and film, and brings the legendary artist to Dublin for a historic conversation about her career. One of Rainer’s most renowned dance pieces, Trio A with Flag (1966), will be performed live together with her works Talking Solo from Terrain (1963) and Chair/Pillow (1969).

A series of talks will be programmed to complement each set of performances, offering audiences the chance to reflect on the various contexts that have informed the work of this revolutionary dancer, choreographer, filmmaker and writer – Yvonne Rainer, regarded by many as one of the most influential artistic figures of the last 50 years. Her work is acclaimed for evoking responses that are at once theoretical, political and deeply personal, the work of Yvonne Rainer continues to resonate with today’s shifting society.

Keynote Lecture & Performance / Yvonne Rainer

To open the programme of selected works by Yvonne Rainer, the legendary artist presents a keynote lecture that spans her 50 year long career of dancer, choreographer, filmmaker and writing, informed by a multiple of movements in dance, cinema, feminism, minimalism, conceptual art, and postmodernism.

Rachael Gilbourne (Curator, IMMA) opens the matinee performance with a pre-performance introduction and short talk on the artist’s multidiscipline practice.

To conclude the performances series, Liz Roche (Liz Roche Company) and Rachael Thomas (Senior Curator, IMMA) reflect on the many facets of Yvonne Rainer’s practice and staging some of the artist’s most iconic work at IMMA, as part of Dublin’s dance festival. Audience are invited to offer their responses in this concluding Q & A.
