image and text: an exploration of connections and overlaps

"Having worked in business for over 15 years I went to college, as a mature student, in 1985. In 1989 I graduated with a Diploma in Textile Design from National College of Art and Design. Two years later I was awarded a Masters Degree in the History of Art also from NCAD. On completion of my thesis, I realised that I needed to continue writing. I also knew that I needed to create my own stories, my own histories, and to break away from the tyranny of the footnote.

I began writing short stories in 1991 and have written many short prose pieces and poems, in addition to stories for children. My work has been broadcast by the BBC World Service, BBC Northern Ireland and by RTE. Many of my stories and poems have been published in anthologies and magazines at home and abroad.

In 2003 I graduated with an MA in Scriptwriting from the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. One of my scripts was shotlisted by the RTE/ Filmbase Short Script Award.

My aim for my period at IMMA is to continue to evolve my practice by using both my writing and my making skills. I plan to pursue my written and visual work and the connections between them and to pursue and encourage others to use their skills to seek and mark their histories."
