The 60 works in this exhibition form part of a collection of over 400 artworks generously given on long-term loan to the Museum by George and Maura McClelland, former gallery owners and promoters of Irish artists such as Colin Middleton, Tony O’Malley and Dan O’Neil.
The collection is particularly strong in mid 20th-century Irish painters, more especially Northern Irish artists, and includes works by William Conor, Gerard Dillon, Colin Middleton and William Scott. Also included in the exhibition are a tapestry by Louis le Broquy and bronze sculptures by F E McWilliam.
George McClelland was born and raised in Omagh, Co Tyrone. He bought his first artwork at the age of twelve and has been collecting ever since. Maura McClelland was born and raised in Annascaul, Co Kerry. They are both now retired and living in the Isle of Man.
