Since the 1980s, Vancouver-based Rodney Graham is recognized for his diverse practice of photography, painting, sculpture, film, video and music. Artists Rodney Graham and Gerard Byrne discuss the sculptural, cinematic, performative and humorist nature of Graham’s practice, drawing attention to the multiple references layered within his work, that enable Graham to seamlessly shift into different roles, characters and contexts.

This talk is programmed with Dublin Gallery Weekend on the occasion of the opening weekend of the exhibition Rodney Graham, That’s Not Me, 24 November 2017 – 18 February 2018 presented in IMMA’s Main Galleries.

Rodney Graham

Rodney Graham, b.1949

Rodney Graham is one of the most consistently inventive artists to have emerged in the last 40 years, tirelessly questioning what it means to be an artist today. Through genre-defying experimentalism, Graham’s practice has shifted from conceptual photography and installation to encompass film, performance, music and painting.

Gerard Byrne

Gerard Byrne, b.1969

Gerard Byrne works primarily in video, photography and performance art. His multi-media installations re-enact historic events using professional actors and theatrical techniques, using twentieth-century literature and mass media as source material. Referencing a range of literary and theatrical sources, his work considers how images are constructed and communicated.
