Richard Saxton, Process Room, IMMA, 2007 Richard Saxton, Process Room, IMMA, 2007

During the residency at the IMMA, Richard Saxton is exploring and documenting the vernacular landscape of Dublin and the surrounding region.  Primarily looking at structures, surfaces, and building technologies, Saxton is adding the current findings to his ongoing Research Archive; a data bank of photographs and drawings from locations around the planet.  With the current documentation in hand, Saxton is also making a number of small-scale sculptures and maquettes.  These include the Archolage Works, a series of maquettes for large-scale sculptures that reinterpret architectural building components, and the series of Terrestrial Research Units (T.R.U.’s); Architectural designs for various remote locations, where creative research and planetary rumination may occur

Richard Saxton is a contemporary artist working in the fields of sculpture, architecture, design, and public art.  His work has been exhibited internationally with recent exhibitions at the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture at the University of Tennessee; the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore, Maryland; the Soap Factory in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and at the 840 Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio.  In addition to the residency at the IMMA, Saxton’s upcoming projects for 2007 will be at the Wall House Foundation in Groningen, the Netherlands, and the Kohler Factory in Kohler, Wisconsin. Richard’s permanent projects are located at the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, Utah; at the Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and in the City of York, Alabama.  His work has been published in the books Engaging Communities; Rural Studio: Community Architecture; the 2004 Whitney Biennial Catalog; Proceed And Be Bold; and in many professional journals including Dialogue; Crit; artUS; and Sculpture Magazine.

In 2002, Saxton founded the municipalWORKSHOP, an independent public art laboratory. Through a collective art-making model, the municipalWORKSHOP creates unique public art projects with municipalities, community-based organizations and community members. Please visit www.municipalworkshop.org for more information. Saxton is also a lead artist in the interdisciplinary art firm M12, and serves as an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
