Dive into the drama of Wagner’s thrilling opera The Flying Dutchman while painting an artistic response to the music with this special collaboration from IMMA, the Irish National Opera and the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

The event begins with an introduction to the opera by Irish mezzo-soprano and painter Carolyn Dobbin who will perform the role of Mary in the production, followed by a full audio experience as you paint your artistic response to the music. Carolyn will give a short introduction to each new act and judges will circulate throughout. The painting session will conclude at 3:30 PM with prizes awarded at 3:45 PM—including, amongst others, opera tickets to Opening Night at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, hotel and dinner vouchers and a year-long IMMA membership. Scroll down this page to find more event details.

Irish National Opera’s first Wagner opera, The Flying Dutchman  stars soprano  Giselle Allen (Elektra 2021) as Senta and bass-baritone  Alfred Walker as the cursed Dutchman fated to continually sail the seas. Bass  James Creswell  plays Senta’s father Daland, with tenor  Toby Spence as Eric, mezzo-soprano  Carolyn Dobbin as her nurse Mary, and tenor  Gavan Ring  as the steersman. Wagner’s epic score brilliantly captures the vast scale of the story, from the stormy overture to the final scene of tragedy and redemption. The Flying Dutchman is directed by  Rachael Hewer  and Irish National Opera’s  artistic director, Fergus Sheil, conducts the Irish National Opera orchestra and chorus.
