Lecture: The Role of the Professional Amateur
Friday 19 January at 2.00pm, Lecture Room
Shumon Basar, London based writer, editor and curator will talk about The Role of the Professional Amateur. This lecture will explore how the word ‘professional’ is valorised in practices ranging from art to singing, whilst being an ‘amateur’ is the very opposite. Basar will discuss the cultural connotations of this apparently binary coupling, and propose the potential conflation of these two conventional stereotypes. The aim is to discover tactics of creative freedom in various disciplines, and how acting from a ‘weak’ position can in fact lead to ‘strong’ processes of disciplinary and knowledge production.
