Open Rooms is a major exhibition of the work of the internationally-acclaimed Spanish abstract painter Juan Uslé. Comprising some 40 works, ranging from the 1990s to 2003, the exhibition is grouped into five series – Soñé que Revelabas, Eolo, Rizoma, In Urbania and Celibataires. Although influenced by ideas ranging from philosophy to multiculturalism, Uslé’s lyrical abstract works do not aim to be in any way representational, rather they convey his personal vision of the world which is poetic rather than narrative. His paintings are not a window on the world but are an area of dialogue which he probes and explores. Many of his paintings lead the viewer into a labyrinthine space in which Uslé’s precise articulation seems to point in a specific direction while still, paradoxically, leaving the way open to the viewer’s interpretation.
