Take a deep dive into the captivating world of collecting photography with Dr David Kronn, Irish-born US-based photography collector, and Seán Kissane, Curator of Exhibitions, IMMA. Together they present an in-gallery conversation on selected works comprising the display of some 130 works donated to IMMA and now on show in the David Kronn Collection exhibition.

Join our guests for a walkthrough on some of the exhibition highlights, featured in a dynamic and rich display of photographic forms, media and iconographies drawn from Dr Kronn’s extensive growing Collection. Evolving genres of landscape, seascapes and portraiture are amongst the topics to be discussed. This talk provides the chance to look and contrast photographic works created by Irish artists alongside some of the most celebrated photographers in the history and practice of modern and contemporary photography worldwide.

David Kronn Photography Collection (28 October 2024 – 26 January 2025) is the fourth exhibition from the David Kronn Collection Donation, since 2011. This extraordinary donation and display feature a diverse selection of works by Aaron Siskind, Irving Penn, Berenice Abbott, Brett Weston, Mike Disfarmer and Martine Franck, as well as contemporary works by Nicolai Howalt & Trine Søndergaard, and Doug DuBois. The selection further explores themes of childhood with works by Rosalind Fox Solomon, and Martin Munkácsi among others; images of celebrity and the gaze by Bettina Rheims and Herb Ritts, and of human impact on the environment by Richard Misrach and Robert Glenn Ketchum and many others.

About Speakers

Dr David Kronn
Born and brought up in Dublin, Dr Kronn studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin and was accepted into the Pediatric residency training program at New York University Medical Center (NYU). This was followed by a fellowship in Medical Genetics, also at NYU. His interest in photography started early and he got his first camera at the age of 10 and even undertook some semi-professional photographic assignments before leaving Ireland. Sparked by a visit to the annual Association of International Photography Art dealers show in 1996, he made his first purchases of works, by William Claxton and Aldo Sessa. In the intervening years his knowledge and appreciation has developed leading to a concentration on certain identifiable themes, such as childhood, landscapes, seascapes and ‘out of the dark’ images.

Seán Kissane
Seán Kissane is Curator of Exhibitions at IMMA and leading curator of the Modern Masters series at IMMA. He describes his practice as ‘curating the edges’, producing deeply researched exhibitions focussed on the work of female and queer artists whose work has been critically neglected. These projects have included major touring exhibitions such as the retrospectives for Derek Jarman, Leonora Carrington, and Mary Swanzy. In 2016 he presented the critically acclaimed ‘Patrick Hennessy: De Profundis’, the first queer reading of Irish modernism. He is currently a PhD candidate at Gradcam, TU Dublin; undertaking research into queer art exhibited in Ireland during and after the Second World War examining how some Irish artists presented divergent images of masculinity that countered prevailing orthodoxies.
