About the Collection

The IMMA Collection is a unique resource which is made available to the public through a vibrant programme of temporary exhibitions and projects. Collection Exhibitions may explore the work of an individual artist, or address a theme or historic period.

Welcome to our weekly Explorer at Home activity. The British painter Lucian Freud worked from a studio in his house. He often painted and sketched his pet whippet dogs Eli and Pluto. Many of us are working and creating at home for now just like Freud. Why not draw, paint or collage a picture of your pet, or some wildlife that visits your garden or balcony and share it with us. For inspiration here’s an etching from the IMMA Collection that Freud made of his dog Eli sleeping after a long walk and a big dinner.

Make sure to tag us with the #ExploreratHome hashtag so we can see your art and include it on our website.

About the Artist

Lucian Freud, 1922–2011

Lucian Freud (1922-2011) was one of the greatest realist painters of the 20th century. Renowned for his portrayal of the human form, Freud is best known for his intimate, honest, often visceral portraits. Working only from life Freud’s studio was intensely private and he mainly worked with those he was close to, often asking subjects to sit for hundreds of hours over multiple sittings to better capture the essence of their personality.
