Éirigh is the result of a dynamic partnership between Lioncor and Reddy Architecture + Urbanism to create a unique gathering space that uses environmentally conscious approaches to materials and assembly that highlight the relationship between the environment, art, architecture and construction. The bespoke Built to Disappear site specific pavilion considers the theme of Earth Rising within the context of energy and how it is generated, used and valued. Constructed using willow stems, which is seen in indigenous woven architecture around the globe, can be locally grown and biodegrades back into the environment.
The focus of the team’s collaborative energy was to create a unique gathering place that was both architectural and artistic by design but also a response to environmental concerns and green approaches to construction. To ensure the structure had minimal environmental impact, the design, materials, and production needed to be efficient – a reflection of modern timber framed housing used throughout Ireland today.
The title Éirigh meaning ‘wake up’ or ‘get up’ reflects the fact that this is the time for us all to fully engage in the climate debate and not leave it to others. Reddy Architecture + Urbanism explain the core of the concept has come from the energy of the group discussions, creative collaboration and conversations driven with purpose –“This pavilion is the expression of that collection of ideas and of gathering. A focal point of energy and awareness that reminds us of the importance of looking, listening and learning and most importantly to join in and get involved in the next steps. Earth Rising….. wake up, get up,……. Éirigh.”
The immersive nature of the pavilion will absorb the visitor in its materiality, lifecycle, energy consumption, durability and texture offering a contemplative and reflective space to consider climate change. Lioncor sees Éirigh as a piece of contemporary art, reminding us of the importance and challenges involved in good design and environmentally conscious construction and the impact it has on each and every one of us as well as the world around us.
