Dreaming of the Dragon’s Nation presents contemporary art from China as part of the China/Ireland Cultural Exchange, an inter-governmental project initiated and managed by the Chinese and Irish governments to promote cultural links between the two countries.
The first part of this collaboration took place in Shanghai and Beijing and showcased works by Irish artists from the Museum’s permanent Collection. The second part of the collaboration, Dreaming of the Dragon’s Nation, presents a cross-section of contemporary art practice in China. The exhibition has been divided into five parts to include – contemporary ink and wash, oil painting, Oriental Metaphysics (Abstract Art of China), sculpture and installation, and photography and video art. Included in the exhibition is the work of up to 50 artists such as Liu Qinghe, Xiang Liqing, Sun Liang, Zhao Bandi and also Yang Fudong, who had a successful solo exhibition in the Douglas Hyde Gallery in 2003.
The exhibition is curated by Li Xu, Director of the Academic Research Department, Shanghai Art Museum.
