ARP Conversations: Eel Soup presented by Erick Beltrán                                                                             Wednesday 16 May 2007 from 10.30am – 5.15pm.
The Process Room, West Wing, First Floor Galleries.

To mark the first event of IMMA’s ARP Conversations, current resident Jorge Satorre (Mexico) has invited fellow artist Erick Beltrán (Mexico) to perform an experimental talk in and around his Process Room project THE HAPPY FAILURE.  The subject of Eel Soup will be the detailed analysis of Beltrán’s piece "Ostwald Ripening" and its publication "Ergo Sum" (a 320 page long newspaper).  Beltrán’s experiment will use a large selection of images, texts, diagrams, maps and letters in an attempt to answer the question, what is a discourse?  Is it a mental machine that works with questions related to language such as WHAT IS an idea _ a sign _ a symbol _ a signifier _ power _ a transmitter _ a copy _ an original _ history _ the final story _ narrative coherence _ an archive _ the rule of the game _ a player _ translation _ a personality and its creator.  Eel Soup makes a direct reference to the structure and style of Aby Warburg’s essays.

Beltrán will remain open to dialogue and engagement throughout his day long presentation from 10:30am until 5.15pm.

Erick Beltrán (México D.F., 1974) studied visual arts at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (ENAP-UNAM).
