All Day Symphony

Audio 9:52mins, wood, eggs
Location: West Wing Arch

This sound work comprises of different sequences, which follow the changing moods and activities of a group of 35 hens in a small organic farm. During the day, all the hens sing together in a constant symphony, that keeps the group together and informed about the current activities and interests. Everybody adds their own personal voice on the 24-hour jazzy jam session. The daily routines of the hens are repeated more or less in the same order: waking up, eating, laying eggs, snoozing, eating, singing the evening ceremony and sleeping.
Based on the original sounds and atmospheres of the poultry house, the soundtrack has been modestly edited to highlight the key activities, and to make the structure of the native hen music easier to understand for human ears.

Petteri – My Life as a Reindeer
Video on DVD, 2007, 20 mins
By Tea Mäkipää and Petteri the reindeer
Location: The Process Room

The artwork presents clear, visual information concerning the necessities, social life and personal matters of a reindeer. Through the lens of a specially mounted video camera, the viewer follows Petteri, a Finnish reindeer, in its daily activities in its own environment. The filmed material is edited to minimize the amount of technical and dramaturgical flaws in order to create a piece presentable for a human audience. Allowing nature to direct, the project aims both to enlarge and enrich the average city dweller’s understanding of the environment we share with other species.

10 Commandments for the 21st Century
Text-based art work: postcards, posters, T-shirts, TV-spot, and website, 2006

This project consists of a ten-point list of rules of behaviour, addressed to people of any age, religion or social status. If put into action, these rules and recommendations could slow down and gradually counteract some parts of the ecological disaster that has been brought about by the human population. The commandments refer to technical solutions that are currently in use — not to potentially better ideas of the future. It is unavoidable that the meaning of these Ten Commandments will change with time. In the best-case scenario, future observers will find our current problems as well as these ten rules of behaviour ridiculous, merely the sign of a primitive period of history around the year 2000. The aim of the project is to awaken discussion and to appeal to the personal feeling of responsibility of the viewers on the level of their daily lives and choices. The second aim of the 10 Commandments for the 21st Century is to relieve confusion and frustration in the face of ecological issues by making the choices very simple.
