About the Artist

Jochen Gerz b.1940

German artist Jochen Gerz studied literature and archaeology in Cologne, Basel and London. He moved to Paris in 1966 and began to work in photographs, texts, installations, videos and performance. Since the 1980s he has created ‘anti-monuments’ in Germany, France, Italy, England, Austria and Ireland. These works subvert the idea of commemoration and involve the public and media in the process of creating and defining artwork. Gerz is now based in Ireland.
