Sonice Faza3a, 2022

Sonice Faza3a (2022) is a sound installation that merges sustainable technology with the mythological histories embedded in Sakiya’s landscape. Developed in response to restrictions that prevent Palestinians in Area C from fencing their gardens, the work reimagines protection through sound rather than enclosure. A network of sonic scarecrows emits shifting signals that deter wild boar during the growing season and later invite them back to help till the soil.

By replacing rigid boundaries with fluid, responsive signals, Sonic Faza3a proposes an ethics of commoning—one in which humans, animals, and land negotiate space through reciprocity rather than exclusion.

About the Artist

Sakiya, est.2012

Sakiya – Art | Science | Agriculture, established by Nida Sinnokrot and Sahar Qawasmi (2012-present) is an academy, residency program, research hub, and farm located in Rinkinia, a small agricultural village seven kilometres west of Ramallah in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory. Sakiya operates in an area where most open spaces and natural resources are prohibited for Palestinian use due to restrictions of Israeli civil and security control. By grafting local traditions of self-sufficiency onto contemporary art and ecological practices, Sakiya seeks to create new narratives around relationships to land, knowledge, production, and commoning. The work prioritizes collaboration with local communities, using art and sustainable practices to confront socio‑political and environmental instability.
