In 1947 Heron was awarded the first Mainie Jellett Memorial Travelling Scholarship for her sculpture in marble, limestone and wood. She used this to study Romanesque carving in Italy and France. From the 1950s Heron also began working in metal. She exhibited extensively in Ireland from this time.
