This artwork explores the themes of loss and mortality, deeply influenced by a personal tragedy in the artist’s life. Created a few years after the passing of her son, it marks a significant shift in MacKeogh’s artistic focus. Previously known for her landscape works and use of natural materials, she turned to the concept of the house as a central motif in her art after 1989. This imagery appears repeatedly in her drawings and sculptures. By constructing houses from fragile materials such as clay and ceramics, often marked by cracks on the surface, MacKeogh evokes the vulnerability of our sense of security. They serve as a reminder of life’s fragility.
