About the Artist

Oskar Kokoschka, 1886–1980

Austrian artist, poet and playwright Oskar Kokoschka studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. After serving in World War I, Kokoschka taught at the Dresden Academy. In 1937, the Nazi Party condemned his work as ‘degenerate art’ and removed it from public view. He fled to England in 1938 and became a British national in 1947. He later taught at the Summer Academy of Fine Arts, Geneva, and designed theatre sets and costumes. Kokoschka’s autobiography 'Mein Leben' was published in 1971.
