About the Artist

Sean Keating 1889–1977

Irish realist painter Sean Keating studied under William Orpen at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin. Keating travelled to the Aran Islands in 1914. His paintings of the west, the Irish War of Independence and the industrialization of the nation, became synonymous with the artistic representation of Irish identity and the Free State. Keating was Professor of Painting at the National College of Art and Design from 1936 to 1954 and President of the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1948 to 1962.
