Born in India to an English father and an Irish mother, Maria Simonds-Gooding (born 1939) came to Ireland with her family at the age of seven. She attended the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and Bath Academy Corsham. Initially inspired by the physicality of the landscape of the Dingle Peninsula, Simonds-Gooding’s paintings, prints and plasterworks examine the struggle between the individual and the environment. Simonds-Gooding has exhibited in Ireland and abroad since the 1970s. Her work is held in significant public collections including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
