About the Artist

Constantino Nivola 1911–1988

Sardinian artist Constantino Nivola (1911 – 1988) learned stonecutting as a trade from his father before studying at the Istituto Istruzione Superiore di Monza, Italy. He moved to the United States and worked as a designer before becoming artistic director for ‘Interiors’ magazine in 1940. Nivola served as director of the Design Workshop at Harvard University Graduate School from 1954 to 1957. He was appointed Professor of Art at Columbia in 1962. He also taught at Dartmouth College, the University of California, Berkeley and the International University of Art in Florence. In 1972 Nivola became the first non-American member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
