About the Artist

Erich Hartmann, 1922–1999

German born photographer Erich Hartmann moved to New York in 1938. After serving with the American army in the 1940s, he worked as a photographer’s assistant and freelance photographer. Hartmann joined Magnum Photos in 1952 and became its President in 1985. Influenced by literature, photographic series include ‘Shakespeare’s England’, ‘Joyce’s Dublin’, and ‘Thomas Hardy’s Wessex’. His documentation of the remains of Nazi concentration camps resulted in the book and exhibition ‘In the Camps’.
