Overview

Santiago Borja, In the Shadow of the Sun, IMMA, 2010

June – August 2010
Architectural intervention

Using architecture as a ready made object, Santiago Borja establishes a dialogue through the union of various cultural elements. These contrasting ensembles allow for other observations and promote multiple interpretations of the architecture itself. Commenting on his practice Borja has stated “Architecture is always ideologically charged, it is not a neutral construction, it can transmit its image in a very clear way and this image tends to be the historic socio-political moment that produced it. When architecture is discussed it is usually through the context of space but architecture is conveyed predominantly as an image and moving through it can produce a sequence of images. One of my main concerns is working through the process that transforms space into an image and how it can be re-signified symbolically.”

Borja has a Bachelor Degree in Architecture and a Master on Theory and Practice of Contemporary Art and New Media. Recent projects include Dècalage, Museo Experimental El Eco, Mexico City, 2009; Sol Artificiel, Museum of Contemporary Art, Marseille, France, 2009, and Halo, Pavilion Le Corbusier, Foundation Suisse, CIUP, Paris, 2008. Forthcoming projects include Divan, Freud Museum, London, May 2010, and Fort Da, Neutra VDL-Research House II, Los Angeles, October 2010.
