Overview

Ruby Wallis’ current practice questions photography’s potential to convey sensory experience to the viewer. Her photographs experiment with perspective and perception. Wallis seeks to challenge conventional representations of landscape, which are controlled by powerful vertical figure in a horizontal space. Instead of adopting the traditional distant view, she frames intimate points of contact. Through her photographic practice, the artist contemplates the moments in which the body connects with its material surroundings. Her images highlight interactions between tactile and tangible surfaces an substances be they natural or synthetic, organic or structured, intimate or abstract.

Ruby Wallis is an award winning artist who recently completed her PhD in Fine Art Practice at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin. She also has an MA in Documentary Photography from the University of South Wales. In 2013 she was nominated for the Prix Pictet Award and won first prize at The Claremorris Open Exhibition. Wallis was selected for Belfast Exposed Futures and is preparing for a solo show in 2016. She lectures in Visual Culture at Griffith College, Pulse College and The Burren College of Art.

Ruby Wallis is on a Production Residency and was nominated by curator Ciara Hickey at Belfast Exposed.
