Studio 11
June – July 2008
Installation, photography, mixed media, video
Originally from Malta and working in the sister island of Gozo, Attard blurs the boundaries of these disciplines to incorporate the irreducible physicality of sites, and to explore their sedimented layers of memory. He treats memory as a product of place, of social interaction, and as a generative process. His work explores the multilayered levels of meaning created with this triangulation through the displacement of signs and symbols to pose unsettling tensions between places, memories, and their representations. Attard has created many site/context-specific installations in several countries and has participated in many collective international exhibitions in diverse locations such as the UK, Cuba, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Israel, South Korea, USA and Japan. His work has been exhibited at the Liverpool Biennale, the Havana Biennale and in the Echigo Tsumari Tiennale in Japan. Attard represented Malta in the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999.
