Overview

Jesse Jones creates works that primarily take the form of film and video. She explores historical instances of communal culture that resonate with contemporary society and politics. Jones isolates forms and subjects, often through the use of Brechtian theatre techniques of estrangement, as a tool for both re-imagining and directly intervening in social discourse.

Jesse Jones has had solo exhibitions at Artsonje Center, Seoul, Spike Island, Bristol; the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin; and REDCAT, Los Angeles; as well as public work such as 12 Angry Films, a temporary drive-in cinema project in Dublin in 2005. Her work The Other North (2012) was shown in Artsonje Seoul and the Centre for Contemporary Art Derry~Londonderry. She participated in the Real DMZ project, on the border of North and South Korea in 2013.

IMMA Residency Profile

The Venice Biennale Production Residency

Working with curator Tessa Giblin as commissioner, artist Jesse Jones has taken up a studio residency at IMMA in preparation to represent Ireland at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017 for which Jones will explore the idea of “national representation at Venice as an alternative site of the state”.  Jesse Jones creates works that primarily take the form of film and video. She explores historical instances of communal culture that resonate with contemporary society and politics involving collaboration with a diversity of groups and individuals. At the heart of everything she does is a desire to articulate hidden currents of dissent running beneath the calm cultural surface, historically and in relation to the current moment.

Other recent projects for Jones include a collaboration with artist Sarah Browne entitled ‘In the Shadow of the State’, commissioned by Artangel, Create and Heart of Glass and her recent installation at the Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane, ‘No More Fun and Games’, which juxtaposed works by women from the gallery collection with a performative installation.

Jones completed an MA in visual arts practice at DLIADT in 2005, is based in Dublin and has worked and exhibited extensively at home and abroad. She has had solo exhibitions at Artsonje Center, Seoul, Spike Island, Bristol; the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin; and REDCAT, Los Angeles; as well as public work such as 12 Angry Films, a temporary drive-in cinema project in Dublin in 2005. Her work The Other North (2012) was shown at IMMA as part of Primal Architecture, in Artsonje Seoul and the Centre for Contemporary Art Derry/Londonderry. She participated in the Real DMZ project, on the border of North and South Korea in 2013.

The 57th Venice Biennale, with Christine Macel as Director, is scheduled to run from May 13th to November 26th, 2017
