Overview

Alexandra Navratil. Portrait over 30m, 2008, Video HD, 2 min, sound/colour.

Studio 14
1 Sept – 31 Oct 2009
Photography, video and installation

The video work of Alexandra Navratil aims to reveal the processes behind image making while leaving the magic of the image intact. Instead of deconstructing the mechanisms of image production, she employs forms of mise en abime in order to preserve the illusion. Her imagery is based in a cinematic context and raises questions around cinematic production, history, narratives or filmic techniques. The archetypal scenes depicted in her work are often romantic, imprinted into a collective memory of cinematic and pictorial landscape. In these scenes the protagonists portrayed are habitually engaged in a solitary activity or contemplation, extras and technicians sometimes becoming almost props. She is concerned with the hierarchies and the politics of looking, these relationships are displayed in the form of the camera pointing at the spectator, a reversed or a refused glance.

Recent exhibitions include The Eternal Return of Difference, 2008, Galeria angels Barcelona, Spain; Coulisses, 2008; Piano Nobile, Geneva, and Trial Balloons, 2006, MUSAC, Museum of Contemporary Art Castilla & Leon, Spain. She has recently been awarded the Swiss Art Award, 2009, and the Prix Mobilière Young Art, 2009. Forthcoming projects include a collaboration with the artist Raymond Taudin Chabot.
