This is the first showing in Ireland by the German artist Franz Ackermann, whose work comprises installations and wall paintings which focus on architecture and abstraction. His intensely coloured and dynamic paintings embody the chaos and flux of cities in today’s incresingly globalised society. Surging architectural forms suggest the numerous physical, social, political, economic and ethnic upheavals that have characterised urban centres over the past decade. The fliud shifts of colour and structure in Ackermann’s images make his cityscapes appear to be living, breathing, and organic entities. For this exhibition at IMMA he will produce a site-sensitive work which will involve painting, sculpture and installation. Ackermann’s work consists of two major practices. His smaller works on paper, Untitled: mental maps, are drawn while travelling, reproducing the cities and landscapes he visits in the form of topographic memory. His larger paintings, which depict urban dynamics in the form of organic energy centres, are based on the experience of all his travels via documentation, postcards and newspapers.
